چکیده

Database administration (tuning) is the process of adjusting database configurations in order to accomplish desirable performance goals. This job is performed by human operators called database administrators (DBAs) who are generally well-paid, and are becoming more and more expensive with the increasing complexity and scale of modern databases. There has been considerable effort dedicated to reducing such cost (which often dominates the total ownership cost of mission-critical databases) by making database tuning more automated and transparent to users (Chaudhuri et al, 2004; Chaudhuri and Weikum, 2006). Research in this area seeks ways to automate the hardware deployment, physical database design, parameter configuration, and resource management in such systems. The goal is to achieve acceptable performance on the whole system level without (or with limited) human intervention. According to Weikum et al. (2002), problems in this category can be stated as:

An ANOVA Based Analytical Dynamic Matrix Controller Tuning Procedure for FOPDT Models

Dynamic Matrix Control (DMC) is a widely used model predictive controller (MPC) in industrial plants. The successful implementation of DMC in practical applications requires a proper tuning of the controller. The available tuning procedures are mainly based on experience and empirical results. This paper develops an analytical tool for DMC tuning. It is based on the application of Analysis of V...

Feedback Control-Based Database Connection Management for Proportional Delay Differentiation-Enabled Web Application Servers

As an important differentiated service model, proportional delay differentiation (PDD) aims to maintain the queuing delay ratio between different classes of requests or packets according to pre-specified parameters. This paper considers providing PDD service in web application servers through feedback control-based database connection management. To achieve this goal, an approximate linear time...

A Monte Carlo-Based Search Strategy for Dimensionality Reduction in Performance Tuning Parameters

Redundant and irrelevant features in high dimensional data increase the complexity in underlying mathematical models. It is necessary to conduct pre-processing steps that search for the most relevant features in order to reduce the dimensionality of the data. This study made use of a meta-heuristic search approach which uses lightweight random simulations to balance between the exploitation of ...

Towards Adaptive Resource Allocation for Database Workloads

Modern computer systems provide hardware resources that allow database systems to execute a large number of tasks in parallel. However, no software system is perfectly scalable, and allocating more resources does not necessarily result in better performance. For commensurate resource allocation and increased efficiency, it is desirable to dynamically allocate hardware resources according to wor...

Power-Aware Throughput Control for Database Management Systems

Performance has been traditionally regarded as the most important design goal for database management systems (DBMSs). However, in recent years, the increasing energy cost gradually rivals the benefit of chasing after performance. Therefore, there are strong financial incentives to minimize power consumption of a database system while maintaining its desired performance, so that the energy cost...
